Exec meeting number 2

We had our second meeting last weekend. Not just us, but we were joined by a few members of the Assocciation of Black Methodist Youth. We spent our time playing giant jenga . . . and discussing the 'Youth Violence' resolution.
Heres a reminder of what it said to refresh your memory;

Youth Violence (passed)

Proposer: Rob Redpath (Manchester & Stockport)

Seconder: Lydia Barlow (York & Hull)

Youth Conference notes:

• That incidents of Violence among young people have increased in recent years

• That people of all ages across the nation are more strongly concerned about being attacked by gangs of young people

• That young people, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds, are being subjected to increased levels of suspicion by the police and general public

Youth Conference believes:

• That violence in all its forms is abhorrent to God since Christ was subjected to crucifixion

• That no-one should be afraid of young people without good cause

• That the Methodist Church has a responsibility to act as a voice for those who are ignored, both the young people who are being unfairly treated and others who feel threatened

Youth Conference requests:

• That Methodist Conference be asked to consider a project to investigate the roles that local churches have to play in reducing the wide-ranging issues resulting from youth violence including prejudice

• That we include and involve other denominations, faiths and secular organisations in this work

• That MYE incorporate the work of ABMY, look into other possible actions and, if appropriate, pass this knowledge on to a region for possible inclusion into a Mission Possible

We spent a long time discussing these issues to come to the conclusion that actually, we as too bodies cannot know the answer or the right way forward on this issue. So we decided to continue working on the issue in the future by working with other groups who are working on this too.

It was really great fun and the guys from ABMY were awesome people.

Acts Open Mike Church

This is not just any plug . . . This is something very different and exciting that will be happening on 20th Febuary in Sheffield at The Showroom Café Bar, Paternoster Row.

Whether you are a poet, musician, dancer, singer, comedian, gargler, storyteller, rapper, puppeteer/ventriloquist or something equally exciting (or even if you are none of these things but you just fancy a go at something or want a great night out), then ACTS Open Mic Church is for you! It is a friendly, classy place, slap BANG in the heart of Sheffield. If you are near the bus/train station, just look for the big blue lights. It's a relaxing environment where the food is great and the drinks are fairly-priced. There may even be some good acts too!

So, why 'ACTS' you may well ask? Well, in the Bible, the book of Acts is where the Christian Church began. ACTS Open Mic Church is a new expression of that, and it's open mic, so it'll be great. It also refers to the acts there will be on the night, so it's a sort of double-barrel thing.

WARNING! SOME PEOPLE MAY PRAY! AND OTHERS MAY SING CHRISTIAN SONGS! BUT UNLIKE IN MANY CHURCHES...

-No one will expect you to do either
-No one will come up to you with a false smile pretending everything in the world is completely perfect
-No one will complain when you sit in 'their seat'
-No one will try to take money from you (except perhaps the bar staff)
-No one will expect you to do anything or behave in a certain way.

Exec meeting number 1

Here are your new executive!

Our first meeting was very eventful as usual, we did all our business, went bowling, made friends and took silly pictures!

Methodist Youth Conference 2007 – An overview

On the 16th of November 2007, 150 young Methodists descended on Cardiff Bay for a weekend of discussion, debate, worship and fellowship. This year’s Methodist Youth Conference (MYC) was held in the purpose built Urdd City Sleepover centre in Cardiff Bay. Everything including the conference room, meals and beds (!) were all in the same building. There were less business sessions than in previous years so on the Saturday afternoon the delegates had the chance to explore attractions in Cardiff Bay such as the Doctor Who exhibition and the Senedd (the Welsh Assembly building).

Exploring the theme

The theme of Let my people go provoked thought and discussion of issues relating to freedom; from this year’s 200 year anniversary of the passing of the Slave Trade Act, concerns about people trafficking and exploitation today, to the freedom we can experience through Christ.

Some of the resolutions passed during the weekend were:

Action for Burma: This called for the Methodist Church to continue to pray regularly for, raise awareness of and take action on the situation in Burma.

Ecumenical Youth Links: MYC agreed that a “common ground” approach to ecumenical work has been found to be a good way of working ecumenically and that both MYE should participate in setting up an ecumenical youth network and that ecumenical links should be considered when setting up new work.

Recycling Bins: MYC believe the Church should do more to protect the environment through recycling especially since large amounts of paper is used and not all churches have recycling bins.

Songs: This called for more modern worship songs to be included in future worship resources.
